EU imposes heavy fine on Microsoft

Brussels : The European Union imposed Wednesday a record fine of 899 million euro on Mixrosoft for failure to abide by a 2004 antitrust order.

The US software giant had charged “unreasonable prices” for patent licenses rivals to connect products to the Windows, noted a European Commission statement.

“Microsoft was the first company in fifty years of EU competition policy that the Commission has had to fine for failure to comply with an antitrust decision”, said EU Competition Commissioner Neelie Kroes. “I hope that today’s Decision closes a dark chapter in Microsoft’s record of non-compliance with the Commissions March 2004 Decision, she added in a statement.
