Delhi judges to visit Commonwealth Games Village site

New Delhi : The Delhi High Court Wednesday decided to send a two-judge team to inspect the proposed site of the 2010 Commonwealth Games Village after a petition filed before it alleged its construction on the Yamuna bed may harm the eco-system.

Justice A.K. Sikri and Justice Rekha Sharma, who heard the petition, will visit the site of the DDA’s controversial games village project Friday afternoon,

The judges are also expected to visit the area near the Akshardham temple where the construction agency plans to carry out other developmental work for the 2010 event.

The petition has challenged the games village site, alleging that the DDA’s proposed construction on the river-bed would adversely affect the eco-system.

The court decided to inspect the controversial site after Solicitor General G.E. Vahanvati submitted a layout plan for the games village during his argument on the petition.

He said the construction site on the riverbank has been divided into several pockets by DDA and that the centre had given a clearance to the project following the National Environmental Engineering Research Institute (NEERI) report permitting the construction of a residential complex in pocket-III.

The petition, filed by environmentalist Rajinder Singh, alleged that the DDA violated the court’s earlier order, which prohibited construction of any permanent structure on the river-bed.
