Patna, Jan 2 (IANS) Bihar’s ruling Janata Dal-United (JD-U) retained the Bikramganj Lok Sabha seat Wednesday defeating opposition Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) candidate by a margin of nearly 30,000 votes in a by-poll.
JD-U candidate Meena Singh’s nearest rival was Ashok Kumar Kushwaha of the RJD. There were 12 candidates in the fray for the Bikramganj by-election held Dec 29, which recorded only 32 percent turnout.
Counting of votes began Wednesday morning amid tight security.
The seat had fallen vacant after the death of JD-U MP Ajit Singh in a road accident a few months ago.
The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) supported the JD-U while the Congress, National Congress Party (NCP) and the Communist Party of India (CPI) supported the RJD candidate.
