Musharraf for peace in critical period

Rawalpindi : Pakistani President Pervez Musharraf on Friday emphasized the need for peace during the present critical period and urged that all possible efforts should be made for ensuring the protection of life and property of the citizens.

The President was chairing a high level meeting attended by the caretaker Prime Minister Mohammadmian Soomro, Interior Minister Hamid Nawaz, Chief of Army Staff General Ashfaq Pervez Kayani, security officials and other concerned functionaries, radio Pakistan reported.

The meeting carried out an intensive review of the law and order situation in the country in the context of the advent of Muharram-ul-Haraam and the forthcoming general elections to be held on the 18th of next month.

The President underscored the need for timely assessment and evaluation of the damages caused to public and private property as a result of rioting that broke out following the assassination of Mohtarma Benazir Bhutto. “Necessary steps have to be taken so that it does not ever occur again”.

Caretaker Prime Minister Muhammadmian Soomro said that a mechanism for assessing the damage to public and private property was being put in place and the federal government is coordinating with the four Provinces in this regard.

The participants of the meeting were briefed about the deployment of Pakistan army and Paramilitary forces on internal security duties in aid to civil administration in various parts of the country.

They were also briefed about the plans for ensuring peace and security during Muharram-ul-Haraam and for the forthcoming general elections.
