“The incident occurred overnight when suspected al-Qaida insurgents attacked with Rocket Propelled Grenades (RPG) a police patrol in the Adan intersection” in the east of the city, the source told Xinhua on condition of anonymity.

Two of the patrol’s vehicles were also damaged by the attack according to the source.

The attack came as Iraqi ministers of defense and interior visited Thursday Mosul and announced that a new security plan has set off aiming at stabilizing the security situation in the city.

Mosul, some 400 km north of Baghdad, has been the hotbed of insurgency and sectarian violence since the U.S.-led invasion broke out in 2003.
