Pakistan: PM formally constitutes Commision on damages assessment

Islamabad : Pakistan Caretaker Prime Minister Mohammadmian Soomro on Friday formally constituted a Commission to assess damages/losses caused to ordinary citizens during disturbances after the tragic death of Mohtarma Benazir Bhutto.

The commission, to be headed by U.A.G. Isani, will have members/representatives from respective Home Department, Inspector General Police and Revenue Department.

A notification in this respect has been issued by the Ministry of Interior. The Commission will submit its report to the government within 30 days of this notification.

The Commission will evaluate the extent of damages to private property throughout the country and recommend adequate compensation to be extended for losses suffered by ordinary citizens as a result of acts of looting, robbery, arson and other unlawful activities in the aftermath of the assassination.

Meanwhile, Sindh Governor Dr. Ishrat-ul- Ebad Khan has approached the federal government to get sufficient funds to pay compensation to victims of the recent violence.

Caretaker Sindh Minister for Local Government Syed Saleem Ahmed Zaidi said this during his meeting with victims of violence here on Friday during inspection of the damaged sites in Qasimabad Taluka here.

He said Dr. Ishrat-ul -Ebad is vigorously making efforts along with different organisations from bottom to top level since occurrence of this unfortunate incident to arrange proper relief for the violence victims.

He said the Sindh Governor has taken various steps in this regard and his visit to Hyderabad and interior Sindh is also a part of his directives.

The Caretaker Minister advised the victims to give actual details of their losses to the committees formed by District Government Hyderabad for collecting data of losses with immediate effect so that their claims of compensation could be processed within shortest possible time.

Syed Saleem said that no political worker could damage public and private properties and the institutions providing services to the common men, but there were criminals who took advantage of the situation and caused huge losses to innocent citizens as well.

District Nazim Hyderabad Kanwar Naveed Jamil said that at present the law and order situation of the district is completely calm and under control.
