Jaipur : Gagan Verma warmed up with a fine victory in the Am-Am of the LG Rambagh Golf Club Golf Championship Monday. In this event, the country’s top amateur golfers play alongside amateurs from the corporate world.
Gagan Verma emerged as the best amateur with a total of 38 stableford points. The team of Navratan Singh and Bhagwan Singh won the 2-man team honours. Deepak Sharma emerged as the Best Stableford points winner while Rajendra Jhakar was the runner-up.
The country’s top amateurs have assembled and will fight for top honours in the four-day strokeplay event starting Tuesday. This is the 12 th and penultimate leg of the LG Indian Amateur Golf Tour 2007-08 season.
The LG RGC championship will see in action the likes of three-time Sri Lankan Open winner Simarjeet Singh, in-form Manav Das, who won back-to-back titles at the LG Pune Amateur and LG Western India Amateur recently, LG Samarvir Sahi Amateur champion HS Kang and twice winner this season Abhishek Jha among other top amateurs vying for supremacy.
Gagan Verma and Tarun Ghogale are both in good form. Ghogale who had back-to -back second place finishes in Chandigarh and Pune respectively will look to do one better this time while Verma will be providing serious competition to the young guns.
Manav Das will be one player to watch out for in the tournament. Das has been in sublime form this season and on current form looks all set to add another title in his kitty. Manav who was forced to sit out for nearly a year due to a back injury came back solidly in winning three titles this season.
Leading junior amateur Amanjyot Singh will spearhead the local challenge. “It does help to play on the home course. However to compete against the top National players is the biggest challenge,” said Amanjyot.
