Udaipur : A guesthouse owner in Udaipur was arrested Wednesday on the charge of raping a British journalist, and an American tourist complained she was molested in the Hindu holy town of Pushkar in Rajasthan.
“We have arrested Prabat Singh, owner of a guesthouse in Udaipur, on the charge that he raped the British journalist on Dec 23 while she was staying in that guesthouse,” a police official told IANS here.
“The 40-year-old journalist did not inform us earlier of the incident. We came to know about it through the British High Commission today. She had sent an email to the high commission alleging she was raped during a night when she asked for an extra blanket from the guesthouse staff,” the police officer said.
“We will produce Prabat Singh, 28, before the court tomorrow,” he added.
Udaipur, known as city of lakes, draws a large number of tourists from India and abroad.
Meanwhile, a tourist from Oregon, the US, alleged she was molested by an unknown person at a temple in Pushkar in Rajasthan’s Ajmer district.
The 28-year-old woman in her first information report (FIR) to the Pushkar police station Wednesday said an unidentified man molested her when she went to the Papmochani temple on a hillock near Pushkar lake Tuesday, a senior police official said.
The woman has said she can identify the man if she sees him, the official said.
“We have registered a case under Section 354 of the IPC (Indian Penal Code) against the unidentified man for molestation,” the official said.
“We have launched a search for the man. We also visited the spot of crime with the American tourist but so far have not been able to locate the person,” he added.
