Ex-German UN envoy says no Mideast stability without Iran

By IRNA

Berlin : Germany’s former UN ambassador, Gunter Pleuger made clear that creating stability in the Middle East without including Iran was not possible.

“A stabilization of the Middle East is hardly possible without the regional power Iran,” Pleuger wrote Tuesday in an analytical piece for the online site of the daily Sueddeutsche Zeitung newspaper.

He stressed any future Mideast security structure had to reflect “Iran’s important role as a regional power.”

Pleuger who was Germany’s top diplomat at the UN from 2002 until 2006, called for a negotiated settlement of the Western dispute over Iran’s nuclear program.

He urged a comprehensive solution to the row with Iran, including a lifting of US and other Western sanctions and security guarantees for Iran.

Pleuger pointed out Iran had so far been the only country in the Middle East which was attacked by weapons of mass destruction during the eight-year imposed Iraqi war with Iran (1980-88).
