Tribes Rage in Pakistan, Dozens Killed

Islamabad : At least seven soldiers and 23 religious fighters lost their lives on Monday during fighting in the Pakistani tribal belt bordering with Afghanistan, reported the Ministry of Defense.

Army spokesman Major General Waheed Arshad told press in Islamabad that the clash was staged in Mohmand zone when rebels ambushed a caravan of the security force.

The military convoy was moving from its base in Ghalanai, main population of Mohmand, to Mohamed Gut when it was attacked.

Seven soldiers and 23 rebels died in the exchange of fire. A military truck was also destroyed in the clash, said the source.

In another report, the army referred to a clash in the tribal region on Saturday, in which an undetermined number of assaultants died and 31 were captured.

Clashes are frequent in that Pakistani region since thousands of soldiers were allegedly deployed therefor Afghan resistance training in those mountainous territories.
