The incident happened in Arghandab district of the country’s southern Kandahar province on Tuesday, a NATO statement said.

The area where the blast took place is located some 10 kilometres north of Kandahar City, the former stronghold of the Taliban militants.

The statement did not disclose the names and nationalities of the soldiers killed and injured in the blast. However, mostly Canadian troops are operating in Kandahar as part of NATO peacekeeping and counter-insurgency operations.

The southern region of Afghanistan is the most volatile area in the country where the Taliban militants are challenging the writ of the government by attacking the Afghan and foreign troops in the cities as well as rural areas.
