Cairo : Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Alexandr Sultanov has held talks here with Egyptian Foreign Minister Ahmad Abul Gheit on the situation in the Gaza Strip and Iraq, and the political crisis in Lebanon.
Foreign Ministry spokesman Husam Zaki said in a statement Sunday Abul Gheit condemned the Israeli actions in the Gaza Strip which were affecting the humanitarian and living conditions of the Palestinians.
He said both men discussed developments in the Palestinian territories and the status of the Palestinian-Israeli peace negotiations, as well as the possiblity of holding a Russian-sponsored conference on the Middle East.
Abul Gheit informed Sultanov of efforts of Egypt and the Arab countries to tackle the political standoff in Lebanon based on an Arab peace initiative, said Zaki.
Egypt, said Zaki, was committed to achieving “an acceptable settlement in Lebanon to end the presidential vaccum.”
Abul Gheit and Sultanov, who arrived here Saturday, also discussed the situation in Iraq and the Iranian nuclear file.
