Gaza Border Posts Still Closed

By Prensa Latina

United Nations : The UN Special Coordinator’s Office for the Peace Process in the Middle East reported on Tuesday that Gaza’s border posts are still closed, and only fuel imports are allowed.

Spokeswoman Marie Okabe said access points from Israel are still blocked, and only 32 trucks with products have entered that Palestinian territory since January 18. She compared this situation with the 250 daily vehicles that entered Gaza before June.

The merchandise flow from Egypt is only temporary, and UN operations must continue, said officials of that office.

According to Okabe, 224 trucks of the UN agency for Palestinians, the World Health Organization, and the World Food Program are stuck, while there is lack of sugar and salt for distribution of supplies to some areas of Gaza.

The authority for Palestinian refugees said malnutrition will increase if the current situation of border closing is continued.

Another complication of Tel Aviv’s extreme measures is that Palestinian UN members with permits to leave are not allowed to leave Gaza, to the detriment of the humanitarian operations.

Meanwhile, WHO expressed concern because fuel distributors in Gaza are on strike in response to the Israeli restrictions, thus health centers are not receiving the fuel they need.

The UN Fund for Children announced that some wells started to provide service again, after power was reinitiated, but 40 percent of the population is still without access to drinkable water.
