Sydney : An Australian soldier was killed and two others were wounded in a road side bomb attack in southern Afghanistan, the Australian Defense Force said Wednesday.
Sean McCarthy, a 25-year-old signaler from Perth, was killed during a road side bomb attack yesterday in the Uruzgun province, said Australia’s defense force chief Angus Houston.
The victim was a member of the Perth-based Special Air Service Regiment.
According to Houston, who was speaking to local media, two Australian soldiers and a third national were also wounded in the blast, and were hospitalized.
Australian Prime Minister Kevin Rudd, who is attending the G8 summit in Japan, described the death as a “terrible loss to his family, the Australian Defense Force and the Australian nation.” McCarthy is the sixth Australian soldier to be killed in Afghanistan since 2001.
