“The teachers of Maths, Science and English subjects in which the students particularly performed very poorly may invite action. After serving a show cause notices against such teachers, necessary action will be taken against them,” said a senior official of the state education board.

Just about 34 percent of students passed in Maths, lowest among all the subjects, followed by Science (43 percent) and English (59 percent), the official said.

“It is true that we have been instructed to take action against such teachers, but its nature is still to be decided,” state board secretary Prabha Tripathi told IANS.

However, sources in the education department said the action against teachers could come in various ways including delay in promotions.

Significantly, the over-all pass percentage of state board class 10 exams (40.07 percent) and for class 12 exams (65.05 percent) were both lowest in the last six years, official said.
