Air show to mark 25 years of Southern Air Command

Thiruvananthapuram : An impressive air show Sunday will mark the silver jubilee of the Indian Air Force’s (IAF) Southern Air Command, an official said.

To celebrate the silver jubilee, year-long events at all the IAF bases of Southern Air Command including Thiruvananthapuram, Thanjavur, Bangalore and Hyderabad, will start Sunday.

Air Marshal S.C. Mukul, air officer commanding-in-chief, Southern Air Command told reporters here Tuesday that an impressive air show would be held here Sunday.

“Also lined up would be a static display of various aircraft here that would be open to the public July 18-20. On display would be Jaguar, AN-32, Mi-8, Kiran, Avro and Embraer aircraft,” said Mukul.

On July 20, 1984, then prime minister Indira Gandhi inaugurated the headquarters of the Southern Air Command near the residence of the Kerala governor in the state capital.

It was in 1996 that the headquarters shifted to its present location near the Aakulam lake, a short distance from the city.
