BJP ‘in all probability’ promised Mayawati PM’s post: Congress

New Delhi : The ruling Congress Monday alleged that the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) had “in all probability” given Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) chief Mayawati “false promises” to make her the next prime minister of India, without taking the consent of the National Democratic Alliance (NDA).

“The BJP is prepared to cut its nose to spite its face only to engage in toppling the government to play the politics of opportunism,” said Congress spokesperson Abhishek Singhvi.

“The BJP in all probability even without the NDA’s consent has decided to cede space to the BSP with false promises to make Mayawati the next prime minister of India,” Singhvi alleged.

He said the BJP could do “anything to create destabilisation”.

The ruling party also said the “BJP has exhibited hypocrisy and opportunism in the sequence of events relating to the 123 agreement and the events leading up to the trust vote”.

“The Left has shown inflexibility and tunnel vision. Regional players like the BSP, JD-S (Janata Dal-Secular), RLD (Rashtriya Lok Dal) and others exhibited nothing but personal avarice and ambition. All have proved their scant regard for national interest and energy security,” he said.

The comments came as the government was facing a trust vote in the Lok Sabha after it was reduced to a minority following the withdrawal of the Left parties over differences on the India-US civil nuclear deal. The two day debate will end in the vote Tuesday night.
