Islamabad : The military operation against extremists on Wednesday continued in Hangu district of North West Frontier Province, killing 20 militants.
The military spokesman Major General Athar Abbas said that targets of the operation have been achieved. The operation is under way in Sarmulo Kando, Yehkando and adjoining areas of the district.
Gunship helicopters are also taking part in the operation along with ground troops, private Geo TV reported.
In Hangu’s Zargari area, locals have formed a 25-member committee to assist government for restoration of peace.
The efforts are in progress to resolve Hangu issues through negotiations and talks underway between jirga members, government and Taliban representatives, Geo TV channel said.
Hangu district has seen a spate of attacks since seven militants were arrested during an operation by security forces last week. On July 19, the militants gunned down 16 paramilitary soldiers after ambushing their convoy in Hangu’s Zargari town.
