Sewage treatment plant to help clean Gomti river

Lucknow : Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Mayawati laid the foundation stone of a 345 million litres per day sewage treatment plant (STP) here Friday for cleaning up the Gomti river and lambasted the state’s previous governments for not making enough efforts to clean up the waterway.

“A sum of Rs. 170 crore (Rs.1.7 billion) would be spent on this STP project that would be completed in one year,” Mayawati said on the occassion.

Owing to the domestic and industrial waste, the river is especially polluted between Lucknow, Sultanpur and Jaunpur districts of the state, she added.

The Gomti flows through eight districts of the state.

The government has tasked State Advisory Council chief Satish Chandra Mishra with monitoring the project.
