“We deplore this terrorist act and demand from the city of Kirkuk officials to take all legal measures to apprehend its perpetrators,” it said in a statement Monday.

The provincial government said that such acts of terror “will have no effect on the people of Kurdistan’s demand that article 140 of the constitution be implemented.”

The incident started earlier Monday when a suicide bomber detonated himself among a crowd of demonstrators in the heart of the city of Kirkuk, killing 22 of them and wounding about 180, all innocent civilians.

Immediately following the blast, authorities blocked off streets and imposed a curfew from 5 pm Monday until 7 am Tuesday.

The curfew applies to people and vehicles throughout the city.
