Ahmedabad : The country cannot be a mute witness to inhuman acts of terrorists and the time has come to adopt a strategy of zero tolerance, Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi told Prime Minister Manmohan Singh who Monday visited the city hit by serial bombings.
In his representation to the prime minister, Modi reminded him of his earlier communications on strengthening the security environment in the country.
Referring to Saturday’s serial blasts, which together have claimed at least 50 lives, Modi said this was not an act to be looked upon in isolation.
Terrorists have spread their tentacles across the country and Ahmedabad was just an extension, another target and a part of the larger design to infiltrate, destabilise and demoralise the country, an official statement quoted Modi as telling the prime minister.
“My government and the people of Gujarat are for ‘zero tolerance’ and will face the challenge firmly. What India needs is a leadership at national level to take the fight into the terrorist camp. If the central government fails, the nation will pay a very high price,” Modi warned.
Modi also called for strengthening legal provisions and said repealing the Prevention of Terrorist Activities (POTA) Act without an alternative rendered states helpless.
He urged the central government to expedite the presidential assent for the Gujarat Control of Organized Crime (GUJCOC) Bill pending since June 2004.
