Gujjars take out ‘funeral’ procession of Raje

Ghaziabad, June 2 (IANS) Members of the Gujjar community Monday took out a symbolic funeral procession of Rajasthan Chief Minister Vasundhara Raje and “cremated” it in front of the district headquarters here.

The procession was in support of Gujjars in Rajasthan who are agitating for being included in the Scheduled Tribe category. The community is presently classified as Other Backward Classes.

“The Rajasthan government is forcing Gujjars to go for agitation by violating the chief minister’s own promise made during the previous agitation,” said Yatendra Nagar, a Gujjar leader.

The protestors also blocked traffic on the national highway-58 at Modi Nagar for nearly three hours. The traffic movement could be restored only after senior police officials convince the agitating Gujjars that their symbolic message had been beamed throughout the country via news channels.
