Two arrested for assaulting American woman in Chennai

Chennai, June 2 (IANS) Two people were arrested for allegedly assaulting and molesting an American woman, the police said here Monday.

According to official sources, Kelly Laurel Baker, 26, a US citizen complained that she had been kidnapped by two men, Jose Mathew, 43, and S. John, 35, from the bar of an upmarket hotel May 24.

She was found waylaid with bruises a day later. Baker claimed she had a memory blackout following attempts to outrage her modesty and was robbed of an expensive digital camera and mobile phone, police sources said.

Following an intensive search, the two stolen items were recovered from the suspects, who said the complainant accompanied them of her own volition, police added.

The two men were remanded in 14 days of judicial custody by a local court here.

Sources in the court revealed that the suspects were booked under the Indian Penal Code sections 354 (assault on a woman with intention to outrage her modesty) and 379 (dishonestly removing any movable property from a person) and remanded judicial custody.
