In a statement, AL Assistant Secretary General for African Affairs Zeid al-Sabban called on some Darfurian movements to show the political will to reach the settlement for the Darfur issue as the ongoing Arab, African and international efforts proved that the Darfur problem does not lack international or regional support.

Sabban also highlighted the AL’s role as a main partner in the peace accord reached in the Nigerian Capital Abuja in 2006.

On May 5, 2006, the Sudanese government signed the Darfur Peace Agreement (DPA) with a main faction of the Darfur rebel movements in Abuja.

But the DPA, which is also called the Abuja Agreement, has been rejected by most other rebel groups including the Justice and Equality Movement, which demanded more compromises from the government.

The AL also proposed to set up development projects to help the displaced Darfurians return to their villages, Sabban added.

In total, more than 2.7 million people have become displaced because of the fighting between rebels, government forces and allied Janjaweed militiamen in Darfur and thousands have died, either through direct combat or disease, malnutrition or reduced life expectancy.
