Police said militants tossed a grenade at the official residence of the station house officer (SHO) of the Kangan police station. “The grenade exploded inside the police station compound without causing any damage,” a senior police officer said.

This was the second explosion in Kangan town in north Kashmir Ganderbal district, 38 km from here, in past three days.

Militants targeted a paramilitary vehicle in Kangan two days back, without any damage.

Security along the north and south Kashmir routes leading to the Amarnath cave shrine has been tightened ahead of the annual pilgrimage season.

Thousands of pilgrims use the north Kashmir Baltel route to reach the cave and return back the same day.

So far 150,000 pilgrims have registered at various counters across India for this year’s pilgrimage.
