The incident occurred Thursday, the NATO-led military said in a statement, but gave no details.

“These soldiers’ lives were taken while trying to help bring peace and security to Afghanistan,” Brigadier General Carlos Branco, ISAF spokesperson, was quoted as saying in the statement.

Around 52,900 multi-national troops are deployed under the flag of the NATO-led ISAF across Afghanistan, fighting militants and helping in reconstruction.

The past three weeks saw increased battles between international troops and Taliban-led militants in the Afghanistan’s restive south and east regions.

The Taliban, fighting the Afghan government and international forces since being ousted from power in 2001, has waged a years-long insurgency and militancy-related violence and conflicts in Afghanistan left as many as 8,000 people dead last year, a record high since 2001.
