Rivers around Bangladesh’s capital polluted seriously

By Xinhua,

Dhaka : The level of pollution in rivers flowing around Bangladesh’s capital Dhaka is so high that no living organism can survive in the waters of these rivers, researchers said.

A three-year research found that the oxygen level of most of the rivers is less than one in per microgram while all species of local fish need 4-6 level of oxygen in per microgram to survive.

The research was conducted by the water resources department, Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology, leading English newspaper The Daily Star reported Sunday.

The researchers found that some invertebrates and small organisms come into being in these rivers when water flow increases during rains. But these life forms completely disappear in the dry season.

They said the waters in these rivers are affected by industrial effluents and wastewater.

The water is also affected by municipal sewage disposal faecal contamination, agro-chemicals and large amount of suspended sediments carried by upstream flow.
