At least 15 militants killed in search for escaped Afghan prisoners

Kabul : At least 15 insurgents were killed by Afghan National Army (ANA) and Coalition forces in Kandahar province of southern Afghanistan, during a search for escaped prisoners from Kandahar City, the U.S.-led Coalition said Sunday.

“More than 15 insurgents were killed and five suspects were taken into custody by the ANA” Saturday in a farming compound west of Rawonay, Kandahar province, the Coalition said in a statement.

“A large cache of munitions and improvised explosive device components were discovered during the search,” the statement said, adding “the combined forces used precision air strikes to destroy the compound after insurgents attacked with small-arms fire.”

Taliban militants in an organized attack on a main prison in Kandahar city, the provincial capital on June 13 night killed at least 15 guarding police and set free some 870 inmates including jailed suspected Taliban militants, according to Afghan officials.
