Aligarh: The Aligarh Muslim University (AMU) organized its entrance tests at four new test centres apart from the Aligarh campus. This was first time in its history that such exams were held outside the Aligarh campus.
In a recent meeting of the executive council of AMU, its vice-chancellor Prof. P. K. Abdul Azis presented a detailed report of admissions for the new academic session that shows increase in numbers of Muslim students admitted this year. He told that 203 Muslim candidates passed entrance examination last year whereas their number has increased to 247 this year. Similarly, Muslim candidates have occupied 19 out of 20 seats of B. Arch. Last year only 14 Muslims could clear test for that discipline.
For the first time, entrance tests were also conducted this year at four external centers in the country, namely Bhopal, Kolkata, Kozhikode and Pune. Prof. Abdul Aziz told that all entrance examinations were concluded in peaceful atmosphere and special attention was paid to transparency. Special committees comprising senior teachers of the university were formed for this purpose. These tests increased the number of Muslim contestants from all over the country. State governments made security arrangements during tests.
Regarding global convention of AMU old boys to be held on October 18-19 this year, the vice-chancellor told that an 11-member steering committee has been formed under his leadership in which Dr. Mahfooz Ahmad has been elected as vice-president. Other members of the committee include Prof. Habibur Rahman, Prof. Ehtisham A. Nizami, Prof. Hameedah Ahmad, Mr. Zafaryab Jeelani, Mr. Zafar Alam, Mr. Waseem Ahmad, Mr. Ehtishamur Raheem and Dr. Mujahid Beg.
The executive council approved the proceedings of previous meetings and discussed the action-taken report. It also reviewed its earlier decision to send notice to the editor of the English daily Indian Express in connection with an interview of the vice-chancellor and blacklist the newspaper for issuing advertisements.
