Addressing a talk program in Nepali capital Kathmandu, Mahat also said that NC, the second largest party in the CA after April 10 elections, would sit in the opposition at the time when the Communist Party of Nepal (Maoist) (CPN-M) and the Communist Party of Nepal (Unified Marxist-Leninist) (CPN-UML), have decided to elect the new Prime Minister and the President of the newly-born republic on the basis of the “mathematical strength” of the CA.

Nepal was declared a republic at the first CA meeting on May 28.

The CPN-M had left the ruling parties’ negotiating table on Sunday.

The meeting of the two Nepali communist parties Monday decided to introduce a proposal at Wednesday’s CA meeting, to amend, for the fifth time, the Interim Constitution promulgated on Jan. 15, 2007.

The ruling seven political parties have already agreed to amend the current constitution to enable a simple majority to appoint the president.
