Filipinos Demand President’s Resignation

Manila : Thousands of Filipinos took to the streets in Manila Friday demanding the resignation of Philippine President Gloria Macapagal.

Organizers claimed the number of participants reached nearly 75,000, while some media reported 15,000 people took part in the demonstration.

Student, civic and religious organizations, opposition parties, and such well known figures as ex President Corazon Aquino joined the protest.

Some 5,000 police and several armored vehicles were deployed along the march and around the presidential palace.

Opposition to the current government is obviously increasing since the capital protests Monday, when thousands of people again demanded the resignation of the president, involved in a new corruption scandal.

A Senate committee is investigating a $200 million contract signed with a Chinese company, including commissions to Jose Miguel Arroyo, the president’s husband, which is considered overvalued..
