Shejwar said: “While 174 high schools and 50 higher secondary schools were opened in 2006-07, as many as 254 high schools and 87 higher secondary schools have so far been opened in 2007-08.”

He said the government has made the provision of opening 922 schools (737 high schools and 185 higher secondary schools) during the current fiscal, of which 341 (254 high schools and 87 higher secondary schools) have already been opened while the process for starting the remaining ones is in progress.

The minister added that irregularities had been found in distribution of free bicycles to girls at government higher secondary schools.

Such irregularities came to light in 2006-07 in Rewa district and immediate action was taken. While a teacher was suspended, a show cause notice has been issued to the school principal.
