Dubai signs power project deals worth over $3 bn

Dubai : Dubai Electricity and Water Authority (DEWA) has signed contracts worth 12 billion United Arab Emirates dirhams ($3.26 billion) with various global firms to boost power generation and water desalination in the emirate.

The contracts were signed between DEWA’s managing director and chief executive officer Saeed Mohammad Al Tayer and the CEOs of various firms on the sidelines of the Wetex exhibition in Dubai, WAM news agency reported Thursday.

The projects will support the city’s rapid economic growth and population increase, Al Tayer said.

The dirham 10.15-billion power generation and water desalination plant to be set up in Jebel Ali will be operational by 2010 summer.

The projects also comprise construction of a separate water desalination plant at a cost of dirham 3.95 billion with a total production capacity of 140 million gallons. It will be completed by June 2010.
