New Delhi, March 25 (IANS) A city court Tuesday sent two Delhi Police personnel accused of accepting a bribe from an associate of kidney racket kingpin Amit Kumar to four days’ judicial custody.
Rakesh and Naresh Kumar were sent to judicial custody till March 29 by Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate (ACMM) A.K. Kohar.
Both had surrendered to the court Monday after non-bailable warrants were issued against them and four others last week.
Four other policemen – head constables Devender Singh and Vijay Bahadur, and constables Kaleem Beg and Surender Rathi – who are also alleged to have accepted bribes from Amit Kumar, are still absconding.
Rakesh and Naresh Kumar will have to undergo a Test Identification Parade (TIP) March 26 and will be confronted with other investigation material.
Last month, Delhi Police had arrested assistant sub-inspector Ravinder Kumar and registered a case against him and the six police personnel for corruption and various other charges under the Indian Penal Code (IPC).
According to the first information report (FIR), the policemen allegedly extorted money from Amit Kumar, who was nabbed in Nepal Feb 7 and is now in the custody of the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), and his associate Upendra Aggarwal early this year to save them from police action.
The massive kidney racket was unearthed Jan 24 after the Uttar Pradesh and Haryana police jointly raided a private hospital and a guesthouse owned by Amit Kumar in Gurgaon, adjoining the national capital.
The international racket in illegal kidney transplants served clients from Britain, the US, Greece, Lebanon, Canada, Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates.
