Arab FMs conclude meeting, approve agenda of Arab Summit

Damascus : Arab Foreign Ministers ended here Thursday their preparatory meeting ahead of the Arab Summit to be held next Saturday.

A source close to the meeting told KUNA that important draft-communique on inter-Arab relations and the Arab-Israeli conflict would be presented to the Arab leaders’ summit on Saturday.

On Mideast Peace, the source indicated that the Foreign Ministers called for a just solution for the Arab-Israeli conflict which ensures the rights of Palestinians and other Arab nations.

The Arab ministers also affirmed “Arabs will stick with their peace initiative for the region which is connected the land for peace notion found in the UNSC resolutions 242 and 338 and the Madrid peace conference” which was held in the Spanish capital in 1991.

The source indicated that the meeting stressed that Israel must return the Golan Heights to Syria, condemning all acts by the Jewish state there.

According to the source, the ministers also expressed solidarity with Syria concerning the issues of US sanctions on Damascus, saying that the US administration ought to utilize other peaceful measures to resolve differences.

On Iraq, the ministers said it was paramount to ensure the unity and security of the fellow Arab country, adding that Arab states must contribute for peace and security there.

The minister also had similar opinions on the situations in Somalia, Sudan, Comoros Islands, and Lebanon.

The source went on saying that ministers called for implementing economic and social resolutions taken in the previous Arab Summits for the welfare of all Arabs.

On preparations for the upcoming Arab Economic Summit to be held in Kuwait on January 2009, the Foreign Ministers welcomed the upcoming meeting, saying that economic events coinciding with the event would surely enrich the summit.
