Seven killed, 21 injured in Maharashtra accident

Mumbai : Seven people including a five-year-old girl were killed and another 21 injured when a truck rammed into the tempo they were travelling in near Hingoli in Maharashtra.

The incident occurred at around 3.30 a.m. Saturday morning, according to assistant sub-inspector Maqbool Ahmed Shaikh of Hingoli district police control.

Shaikh told IANS over phone that the tempo was carrying people who had gone to a fair and pilgrimage in the neighbouring district of Parbhani.

The truck (MH-28-B-6781) suddenly came from the opposite direction and crashed into the tempo that was flung off the Hingoli-Parbhani district highway. The accident took place around 550 km from Mumbai in central east Maharashtra.

Six of the occupants of the tempo (MH-08-B-3918) were killed instantly while another succumbed in a nearby hospital Saturday afternoon, said Shaikh.

The dead were identified as Nitish B. Padole (15), Malti T. Shedge (5), Sambhaji S. Chavan (40), Vithal S. Bhalerao (40), Vishnu A. Kadam (28), Vilas P. Makhante (30) and Ganpat Bhalerao (30).

The truck driver Suresh Dayaram Chavan has been arrested for rash and negligent driving.

Shaikh said that the condition of some of the injured, including 10 women, is serious. They are admitted at a hospital in the Limbada-Makta village in Hingoli.

There were few vehicles on the road when the accident occurred.
