Zero tolerance to terrorism :Pranab

By IANS,

Moscow : Advocating zero tolerance to terrorism, External Affairs Minister Pranab Mukherjee has called for adoption of a new comprehensive United Nations pact on terror.

Mukherjee, speaking at the Russia-India-China ministerial meet in Yekaterinburg, sought to push forward the stalled draft of the India-backed UN Comprehensive Convention on International Terrorism.

His comments came after at least 63 people were killed in seven coordinated bomb blasts in Jaipur Tuesday evening.

Mukherjee said there was an urgent need to adopt a comprehensive convention on combating international terrorism by the United Nations and a “zero-tolerance” approach against terrorism.

India had first submitted a draft of the comprehensive pact 1999, but it has so far not been adopted – mainly due to differences on the definition of terrorism.

Mukherjee dismissed attempts to bring in the aspect of addressing “root causes” of terrorism. “Terrorism in any form or manifestation is unacceptable,” he said.

He also thanked the foreign ministers of Russia and China for their expression of sympathies after the Jaipur blasts.
