Dhaka : Former Bangladesh army chief of staff Gen (retd) Mustafizur Rahman was arrested here Sunday in a graft case charging him of purchasing Mig-29 warplanes causing loss to the country.
He was arrested and detained at Apollo Hospital in capital Dhaka where he was undergoing heart treatment.
According to the case, former prime minister Sheikh Hasina, Gen (retd) Rahman and some other top defense officials were made accused in the purchase of Russia-made eight Mig-29 fighter jets that caused a loss of 7 billion taka (about 100 million U.S. dollars) to the public exchequer.
The jets were purchased in February 1999 when Sheikh Hasina ruled the country as the prime minister.
Hasina who was arrested on July 16, 2007 is facing several cases including the Mig-29 case.
Police arrested Gen (retd) Rahman following an arrest of warrant issued by a Dhaka Divisional Special Judge’s Court.
Since assuming the office in January last year, the incumbent caretaker government cracked down on corrupt politicians and businessmen to clean politics.
Nearly 200 corrupt politicians, former ministers, MPs and businessmen were nabbed on corruption charges, many of them already tried and sentenced with various terms.
