Islamabad : Pakistani Prime Minister Syed Yousaf Raza Gilani has said that the ruling Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) to which he belongs does not want confrontation with the president but supremacy of the country’s 1973 constitution and the parliament.
Talking to senior journalists and columnists here Sunday, Gilani said that the constitutional package for restoration of deposed judges and further empowering the parliament had been prepared and its copies would be provided to the coalition partners for reaching upon a consensus.
Gilani was quoted by the private NNI news agency as saying that time and modalities for implementing the constitutional package would be decided in consultation with the coalition partners. He said that the PPP had its own policies and did not want to adopt any confrontation with anyone.
He said that the 1973 constitution was neither in a parliamentary nor a presidential form at present due to amendments made in it. He said that the PPP believed in the parliamentary system of the government and wanted to restore the 1973 constitution in its original shape for ensuring the supremacy of the parliament.
The prime minister said that the PPP sincerely wanted to make Pakistan a cradle of peace and hub of development for which all out efforts would be made.
