Canada to ask Europe to persuade India, China to cut GHG

By NNN-PTI,

Ottawa : Canadian Prime Minster Stephen Harper will ask his European counterparts to persuade the developing nations such as India and China to take more significant steps in reducing greenhouse gases when the Kyoto Protocol expires in 2012.

Harper plans to lay out the Canadian position when he meets with the leaders of four key members of the Group of Eight industrial nations before the annual G8 summit in July, Globe and Mail reported yesterday quoting a government official.

“The Prime Minister will speak about the need for a truly global approach to a global challenge of climate change.

“This means if you really want to have an impact on dealing with climate change, you can’t have major economies and emitters like India and China and others outside the process. Everybody’s got to be part of the process and do their part,” the official was quoted as saying by the daily.

The European Union believes that Western industrialised nations must lead the charge on reducing greenhouse gases, which scientists say are the main contributor to increasing world temperatures.

Japan, which is playing host to the G8, wants to ensure that emerging economies sign on to talks to develop a new deal to reduce carbon emissions for the years beyond 2012, when Kyoto Protocol expires.
