Kathmandu : A high-level meeting among Nepal’s three major political parties held at official residence of Prime Minister Girija Prasad Koirala concluded without reaching a common agreement Sunday.
Three parties, Communist Party of Nepal (Maoist) (CPN-M), Nepali Congress (NC) and Communist Party of Nepal (Unified Marxist-Leninist) (CPN-UML), initiated the consultation at PM’s residence from early Sunday morning to reach political consensus with only three days remaining to the historic first meeting of the Constituent Assembly.
The meeting ended inconclusively as NC and CPN-UML adhered to their former stance on amendment of the interim constitution before formation of new government. While NC and CPN-UML have said they would want the amendment to ensure that a government can be formed or dissolved based on simple majority, the CPN-M insisted that the current system of requiring two-third majority to change government to continue.
The meeting, which started from 8:30 am local time (0245 GMT) and went till noon, ended after the three parties agreed to continue internal homework and meet again on Monday.
According to NC leader Amod Prasad Upadhyaya, they asked the CPN-M to improve behavior and end the environment of terror. “Prachanda asked how he can demonstrate it and said he was willing to bring out a document if necessary. But we told him that rather than any document, we want to see the change in practice,” Upadhyaya told reporters.
NC leader Bimalendra Nidhi said that the CPN-M floated the proposal of power-sharing among the parties in the next coalition government during Sunday’s meeting.
Nidhi also expressed confidence that the CPN-M will come up with a basis of consensus on Sunday’s meetings.
