Raipur : Five youths, who were posing as Maoists, were arrested Thursday in Chhattisgarh for extorting money, the police said.

Officials at the police headquarters here said that acting on a tip-off, the police arrested the five youths in the state’s northern Korea district. They were posing as Maoists and extorting money from local businessmen and elected village representatives.

The youths were members of a gang that extorted millions of rupees from traders and local politicians during the past six months, a police official said.

The extortion racket by educated unemployed youths posing as Maoists, mainly in southern Maoist hotbed Bastar region, is common.
