Islamabad : The Pakistani Prime Minister Thursday said supporters of “undemocratic” forces were responsible for prevailing political crisis however the country can overcome the challenges by adhering to the democratic process on a sustainable basis. Addressing a gathering at the National Defence University, Yousuf Raza Gilani said the political leadership of the country was determined to resolve all contentious issues.
He fixed the responsibility on the politicians who lacked integrity and readily lent political support to non-democratic forces and the members of bureaucracy, who compromised on principles and served non-constitutional entities. He said the deadly alliance of military officials with a class of Politicians, Bureaucracy, Judiciary and civil society and media groups “has not allowed the people of the country to establish and consolidate a democratic structure.” He said the Constitutional distortions created over the years since the promulgation of 1973 constitution would be removed through the constitutional package which has already been formulated. “We have demonstrated that the unhealthy political trends of the past have been buried by the current political leadership; this we have proved by actions not by mere words,” said the Prime Minister.
He said though the country was facing enormous problems these were not greater than the will and commitment of the people.
“They know how to convert an adversity into an opportunity,” he added. Pakistan is currently facing political crisis that have almost disabled the coalition government at the center.
However, the two coalition parties, Pakistan Muslim League (PML-N) and Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) have joined hands to clip the powers of President Pervez Musharraf.
