Suicide Grows among US Military

Washington : At least 108 US soldiers committed suicide in 2007, the greatest number for a year in the last two decades, admitted sources of the US Department of Defense Thursday.

According to TV network CBS, Pentagon officials who remained anonymous provided elements of a report to be published in the next hours.

The statistic data only include soldiers and active reservists, said the officials, who commented that nearly 25 percent of the deaths occurred in Iraq.

In 2006, 102 US soldiers committed suicide, and 85 took the same decision in 2005.

Other investigations showed the prolonged and repeated deploys of US soldiers in Iraq and Afghanistan, as much as he existing violence.

Recently, US military commands estimated in more than 2,000 the number of military involved in suicide attempts in 2007.

The administration of US President George W. Bush started the war in Afghanistan in October 2001 and less than two years later it invaded Iraq, territories where there are 185,000 occupation troops.
