Home defeat leaves Osasuna in trouble in Spanish Liga

By DPA,

Madrid : A 0-2 defeat at home to fellow strugglers Betis has left Osasuna in big trouble in the Spanish Liga.

The latest defeat Saturday night leaves the Pamplona side second from bottom, with just four points from eight games.

Former Spain manager Jose Antonio Camacho has failed to revive Osasuna since taking over from Jose Angel Ziganda two weeks ago – and has lost both matches in charge.

“The boys tried really hard tonight,” said Camacho. “But we committed several important mistakes, and things just cannot continue in this way.”

There were no goals in a tense first half. Betis playmaker Mehmet Aurelio broke the deadlock in the 52nd minute with a classy free-kick.

The first Betis goal damaged Osasuna’s brittle self-confidence, though they did create a couple of half-chances.

But four minutes from time Osasuna veteran keeper Ricardo Lopez spilled a free-kick from Achille Emana – and Mariano Pavone was in the right place, at the right time, to turn in the rebound.

The second Betis goal caused many Osasuna fans to leave the Reyno de Navarra stadium before the end, worried and anxious about the fate of their team.

The important win takes Betis up to 13th, and relieves the pressure on coach Paco Chaparro.
