Alappuzha (Kerala) : Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) state unit president P.K. Krishna Das Monday lashed out at the Left government in Kerala for allegedly going soft on two hard-line Muslim organisations suspected by the police of terror links.
The National Development Front (NDF) and the People’s Development Party (PDP) led by Abdul Nasir Maudany have come under the police scanner after they found that at least four militants killed in Jammu and Kashmir belonged to Kerala.
Communist Party of India-Marxist (CPI-M) state secretary Pinarayi Vijayan last week described the NDF as a “recruiting agent of international terrorist outfits”.
“We wish to know why Vijayan, who attacked the NDF, has still not asked for a ban on the NDF. What is strange is that both the Left and the UDF (United Democratic Front) over the years have had a tactical alliance with these two Muslim organisations. In the 2006 assembly polls, the CPI-M candidates went around for election campaigning with pictures of Maudany, who was then in Coimbatore jail,” Das told reporters here.
He added that while in the 2006 polls the Left got support from both the NDF and the PDP, during the 2001 assembly polls it was the UDF which got the support of the PDP.
Sources said the state intelligence officials have submitted a detailed report to Home Minister Kodiyeri Balakrishnan on how hard-line student organisations have mushroomed on the campuses of the three main universities in the state.
The report says that some Muslim outfits are organising secret meetings at night in the college hostels.
“Surveillance has been stepped up and around 100 people are being closely watched. Arrests would be made as and when we are sure (of their terror links),” Kochi Commissioner of Police Manoj Abraham told reporters Monday.
The police are monitoring the activities of certain organisations in Ernakulam, Malappuram and Kannur districts, police sources said.
