Earthquake jolts western China

Beijing : An earthquake measuring 5.5 on the Richter scale early Friday jolted the western parts of China, the National Seismograph Network Centre said.

The quake occurred at 1.38 a.m.

The epicentre of the quake was close to the Sichuan province in southwestern China, where a massive earthquake on May 12 had devastated the area, killing and wounding thousands in the aftermath.

The northwestern Gansu and Shaanxi provinces also felt the tremor.

No further details were immediately available.
