“We will explore a possible peacekeeping or other arrangement for Abkhazia and South Ossetia. We are also looking at sending a fact-finding mission to Georgia,” Ban Ki-moon said at a press conference.

The secretary general said the fact-finding team would give its report on the humanitarian situation in Georgia and its disputed republics after last month’s conflict.

On Aug 8, Georgia attacked its breakaway province of South Ossetia to gain control of the region, but Russian soldiers forced out Georgian troops in a five-day war.

On Aug 26, Russia recognised Abkhazia and South Ossetia as independent states.

The international community, including the US and Britain, widely condemned the Russian decision.
