The incident was reported Wednesday from Lakhimpur Kheri district, some 150 km from here, when the bodies of Nizamuddin, 30, and Moinuddin, 25, were found hanging from a tree in a mango orchard.

On Monday, Nizamuddin’s wife Parveena Begum set herself on fire, after which her family lodged a complaint against him and his brother, accusing them of pestering her for dowry.

Parveena is admitted in a hospital and is in a stable condition.

“Since then, police officer Jitendra Singh Sengar kept visiting our house and threatening us with dire consequences. He also locked our house and punctured the tyres of our tractor,” a police complaint lodged Thursday by the relatives of the deceased stated.

“Fearing further atrocities, Nizamuddin and Moinuddin committed suicide,” the complainant said.

Irked by the deaths, hundreds of residents took to the streets and blocked the road demanding the arrest of Sengar and his other colleagues.

Superintendent of Police of Lakhimpur Kheri Ram Bharosey told IANS that Sengar and two constables had been suspended and a magisterial inquiry had been ordered.
