New Delhi : The Election Commission Sunday issued notice to Union Home Minister P. Chidambaram for allegedly offering electoral incentives during a security review meeting in Rajasthan and asked him to reply by Monday.
“The commission asks for the comment of P. Chidambaram on a BJP (Bharatiya Janata Party) complaint that on a security review visit to Rajasthan he took up electoral issues like grant of citizenship to displaced Hindus from Pakistan, remission of fee for grant of it, facilities for passengers travelling on the Thar Express etc.,” a statement issued here said.
The poll panel asked him to reply to its notice by 5 p.m. Monday.
The home minister had held a meeting with Rajasthan Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot late last month to discuss security-related issues.
The BJP in its complaint to the poll panel said the minister made the announcements, including about granting citizenship to displaced Hindus, with the Lok Sabha polls in mind.
